Okay, depending on how you look at things, today’s blog entry could be seen as a Scottish only plug. However, no matter where you are from, if you are a young angler there is an opportunity waiting for you. Further to that, this blog entry isn’t aimed specifically at kids. This is for any parent with kids who are into fishing and would like to proudly watch as they reach the stars.
Representing your country as a young angler is an amazing experience. As much as I would never admit this to my early coaches Mike Horn and Jimmy Connell, my experience through fishing for Scotland as an under-16 junior set the major building blocks for who I am today.
My five consecutive years of international match fishing have been phenomenal. There have been highs and lows, and a whole bunch of memories that I will never forget. Gold medals, wooden spoons, zone wins and blanks. Nobody or nothing can take this experience away from me. I have been to every corner of the United Kingdom fishing with Scotland, and have even gone abroad. And here’s another bonus; being able to say you have represented your country is a real boost for the CV.
Here’s quote from Scottish Federation of Sea Angers qualified coach Chris Horn regarding the forthcoming Scottish Junior and Youth Selection day to be held on Saturday the 28th of March 2009.
Critically, the selection process is not a match where the winner is automatically selected for the team. The organisers are looking for individuals to show an array of skills including casting, retrieving, bait presentation, organisation, and a sense of awareness in terms of why an angler next to them is catching and they perhaps are not.
The squad selected will then be taken forward on a path of development where coaches from the SFSA will look to work towards the Home Nations in Wales this year. Not all members of the squad will travel as we are not only looking for members to be immediately ready, we are also seeking members who we can develop and work with for the future.

There will be a team of coaches on the day who will be able to provide coaching in various different aspects of fishing for any adults who wish to pop along, however, in context the majority of time will be spent working with the youngsters!
