I was one of lucky readers of 'Trout Fisherman' to win the £100 prize, so I added a bit to it and bought the SK8 rod. WOW!! I have used Sage and Hardy rods for the last 20 years and this was by far the biggest surprise. I purchased the 9ft rod and was able to cast into the wind with ease taking 6 fish for 16 1/2 lb, this is by far the best rod that I have ever fished with and in time will be replacing all my rods with this range. My only criticism for me is that I prefer snake eyes but maybe that is because I'm a bit old fashioned. After a bad experience with another manufacturer's rod costing over £600, a very good friend of mine lent me a Sonik SK4 #4/5, and I have never looked back! I have got 5 rods in the range now which have cost me the same as the one previous rod. They do the job better in my opinion & at a fraction of the cost, add the SK4 fly line and you get the perfect combination. I've used SONIK rods since they were released and I must say that having fished with virtually every single brand of rod, these are the rods I've been looking for. They have everything! First I thought the SK4 9'6" #7/8 was phenomenal: responsive, lovely feel, surprisingly delicate, but with real power to stop a big Rutland overwintered rainbow. Casting is a pleasure and I found that less power from yourself equals more distance in the cast. The handle is perfect: not too thick, the reel seat is easy to use and works well, I like the long lines on each section and the cosmetics are (if this isn't being too weird) very sexy. It just looks great! I know it shouldn't matter, but it just does. Then I tried the 10' #7/8 and found it has all the good things found on the 9'6" with the benefit of the extra length for boat fishing. As a full time guide and instructor I now teach using the SK3's, slightly more forgiving and slightly softer but still a joy to use. The 10ft 7/8wt SK4 Fly Rod was a dream to cast with, I achieved the distance I wanted effortlessly catching most of my ten fish at a good distance missing only a couple of takes all day. Playing the fish with this rod was fun and easy, I was in control from the moment each fish was hooked until it was safely landed. A fantastic fast action rod of the highest specification and quality. I like the little touches like the lines to enable quick and accurate set-up and the thumb indent at the top of the handle. The sk3 has my attention as being one of the best all-round fly rods out on the market today for streams, rivers, lake and I even took mine to the Danish coast for sea trout, on light tackle a Big Bang compared to the price you pay from more expensive rods from other manufacturer - the sk3 has got them beat by a long shot. A few days ago I received my SK wading jacket. First Impression a very nice tailored jacket with a very durable outer shell and great features. The fit is also great and gives enough freedom for movement while casting. Since I recieved the jacket I gave it a good testspin in very harsh weather on lake Oostvoorne in The Netherlands. It is superbly waterproof and with the right layering it breathes well. Given its price a very good wading jacket which could compete with jackets such as the Patagonia SST jacket.
